The University of California Riverside in partnership with American Forensic Nurses, Inc., presents online, a 40-hour comprehensive sexual assault examiner academic training program, The Sexual Assault Examination: Adult and Adolescent. The course is designed to prepare registered nurses and other qualified health care professionals to perform the forensic examination of sexual assault victims and alleged perpetrators. Content is also useful for law enforcement officers, Prosecuting Attorneys, Defense Attorneys and victim advocates who desire to understand the processes, procedures and rationale for elements of this specialized forensic examination. Upon successful completion of the academic and internship portions of the program, licensed participants may begin practicing as sexual assault examiners (SAE, SAFE, SANC, FNE, SANE).

The course content includes introduction to appropriate anatomy and physiology, forensic terminology, identification of traumatized tissue, use of toluidine blue dye, utilization of Wood's lamp and other forensic light sources, photography (including binocular microscopy-aided imaging), collection and preservation of physical evidence and biological specimens, and evidentiary chain of custody. Essential assessments for treatment and follow-up of related physical and psychological injuries are addressed, including the roles and responsibilities of the victim advocate. Throughout the course, precise terminology and comprehensive documentation processes are emphasized, along with preparation for depositions and courtroom testimony.

Upon completion of the 40-hour academic portion of the course program, registered nurses and qualified health care professionals seeking a certificate from the University of California as a Sexual Assault Examiner are required to complete a 45-hour clinical internship program. This internship includes observations and supervised practice in all essential elements of the forensic sexual assault examination. In addition, there are other specified learning experiences including observation of law enforcement field operations, case management procedures of a prosecutorial agency (District Attorney), criminal court proceeding and monitoring of a sexual assault victim advocacy program.

Through this online course, American Forensic Nurses Inc., and University of California have provided the required academic and clinical preparation for health care professionals who desire certification or other credentials as a forensic sexual assault examiner. It also offers an essential orientation to the processes and procedures of sexual assault victim care for those associated with administration of justice, law enforcement and advocacy programs.

This self-scheduled, self-paced course provides a rare opportunity for qualified healthcare personnel and others to acquire essential information about the forensic sexual assault examination. The content has been carefully researched and will be presented by qualified university instructors who are available throughout the offering to clarify or amplify various course content, as well as to assist in linking participants to professional resources within their own communities for additional learning.
