Sexual Assault Examiner Training: Adult and Adolescent
Web based 60-Hour Online Self Paced Sexual Assault Examiner Training Program
The American Institute of Forensic Education presents online, The Sexual Assault Examiner Training: Adult and Adolescent, a 60-plus-hour comprehensive self-paced sexual assault examiner academic training program. The course, rich in content, is designed for registered nurses, nurse practitioners, physicians, and other scientific professionals performing medical forensic evaluations on victims of sexual assault and alleged perpetrators.
The course materials include medial legal history taking, physical examination evaluation, genital anatomy and physiology, related forensic terminology, oral, anal and genital trauma identification, use of toluidine blue dye, utilization of forensic light sources, medical-legal photography, collection and preservation of physical evidence and biological specimens, evidentiary chain of custody. Treatment and follow-up planning for related physical and psychological injuries, the documentation process, sexually transmitted infection and pregnancy testing and prophylaxis, infection control, and preparation for courtroom testimony are also addressed. This training also includes the medical forensic protocol for alleged perpetrators of sexual violence.
The information is presented in a practical manner and combines an interactive study experience using the convenience of the internet. The extensive internet resources are an essential part of this distance learning program. At the conclusion of each lesson, there is a self assessment learning activity intended to assist the student in identifying areas of strengths and weaknesses, and to evaluate readiness for the discipline of sexual assault practice. Also, presented for practice study are clinical images of oral, genital and anal trauma resulting from sexual assault.
This training does not certify the examiner to perform sexual assault examinations, however, it does provide a solid foundation for conducting medical forensic evaluations. Upon conclusion of this program, the student receives a Certificate of Completion indicating that the 60-hour academic coursework has been completed. There are nursing CEUs available. For continuing education credits, contact the licensing board in your State. Students have up to six months to complete the online module.
The clinical and non-clinical internship are the responsibility of the student to arrange after completion of the didactic portion of the course. Internship competency should be accomplished by individually working with the appropriately skilled professionals in the community. Competency skills are completed according to jurisdictional procedure. Internship competency guideline documents are available through our program.
The clinical internship includes observations and supervised practice in the medical forensic evaluation, evidence collection, documentation, chart review, and peer review. The non-clinical competency includes other specified learning experiences such as observation of law enforcement field operations, case management procedures of a prosecutorial agency (District Attorney), criminal court proceeding, participation in a sexual assault victim advocacy program and crime laboratory tour.
